Big Changes Coming? PBKS May Let Go of Stoinis and Chahal Before IPL 2026 - Reports

PBKS could raise ₹29 crore by releasing Stoinis and Chahal, allowing them to target all-rounders, backups, and young spinners in the IPL 2026 auction.

IPL 2025 runner-up Punjab Kings may release their second most expensive signing, Yuzvendra Chahal, along with Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis, ahead of the IPL 2026 mini-auction, as per sources.

Punjab Kings had a fantastic run in IPL 2025, reaching the final for the first time in a decade. They dominated much of the season under Shreyas Iyer before falling short against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the big final clash, ending their hopes of securing a maiden IPL trophy at Ahmedabad.

₹18 Crore Chahal Struggles to Justify Price Tag

Expectations were high when PBKS signed Yuzvendra Chahal for ₹18 crore, making him the most expensive spinner of the tournament. However, Chahal failed to fully justify the price tag. Despite picking a hat trick and season with 16 wickets in 15 matches, his economy rate remained a concern, going over 10 runs per over in most matches.

Chahal, once a Purple Cap winner with Rajasthan Royals, couldn’t replicate that form with Punjab. According to reports, the franchise is considering releasing him to free up funds ahead of the mini-auction.

PBKS Likely to Release Stoinis, Eye ₹29 Crore Purse for Mini-Auction Rebuild

A similar situation applies to Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis, who was signed for ₹11 crore. The Aussie all-rounder struggled with both bat and ball and was even dropped from the playing XI in a few matches due to poor form.

By releasing Stoinis, PBKS would raise their total purse to ₹29 crore, which would allow them to target all-rounders, backup players, and promising young spinners in the mini-auction to assemble a formidable team under Shreyas Iyer.

Meanwhile, other IPL franchises may be able to acquire these seasoned players at significantly reduced costs as a result of this possible release. Royal Challengers Bengaluru could eye Stoinis as a replacement for Livingstone, while Rajasthan Royals may attempt to bring Chahal back. Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings are reportedly interested in Marcus Stoinis if they miss out on Cameron Green, whom they are rumoured to be targeting in the mini-auction.
